Arsenal Football Club commonly referred to as Arsenal or The Arsenal is one of the most greatly supported English football clubs. The fans are very dedicated and long-standing rivalries have developed with many other European football clubs. The most well known rivalry is with the team’s neighboring team, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. When these two teams play each other it is known as the North London derby.
Arsenal fans commonly refer to themselves as “Gooners,” which comes from the team’s nickname, “The Gunners.” The fan base is very large and loyal and usually sell out all of the home matches. Arsenal had the second highest average in the league for attendance of fans in 2007-2008. There were 60,070 fans that attended, which was 99.5% of stadium capacity. As of 2006, Arsenal is ranked fourth for highest average attendance of all time.
Arsenal also has many domestic supporters’ clubs, such as the Arsenal Independent Supporters’ Association and the Arsenal Football Supporters Club. Another supporter, the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust promotes fans’ participation in club ownership.
There are published fanzines that support Arsenal such as Up The Arse!, The Gooner, Gunflash, and Highbury High.
Arsenal fans sing the traditional football chants along with “Boring, Boring Arsenal” (when the team is playing good), and “One-Nil to the Arsenal.” There is also a club band called the Arsenal Away Boyz that praise players, the manager, and fans of the team by rewriting the lyrics to popular songs.
Arsenal has a large fan base outside of London and England. There are fans worldwide and as of 2007 there are 24 UK, 37 Irish, and 49 overseas Arsenal affiliated supporters clubs.
